Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is a procedure that improves the body shape. Liposuction uses a tube and vacuum device to remove unwanted fat deposits that don't respond to dieting and exercise. Common locations of a liposuction procedure include chin, cheeks, neck, upper arms, above the breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles.

Lipsocution is usually performed as an outpatient in Dr. Sproule's private operating facility, or at the Scarborough General hospital. Extensive surgery will most likely require a short inpatient stay.

Liposuction surgery is usually performed under local or general anestheisa, another alternative is using an epidural. This type of surgery usually takes about 1 to 2 hours or more, depends on the extent of surgery.

You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following Dr. Sproule's instructions both before and after surgery.

Liposuction, like some surgeries, involves some risks. Possible risks include: infection, excessive fluid loss leading to shock. You may also experience some fluid accumulation, injury to the skin, rippling or bagginess of skin, asymmetry. If you are exposed to the sun, the changes in your pigmentation may become permanent. Some side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, and a burning sensation.

You should be back to work in about 1 to 2 weeks. Refrain from strenuous activities for about 2 to 4 weeks following your liposuction surgery. The swelling will most likely persist for another 1 to 6 months more. The results of a liposuction are usually permanent with a sensible diet and exercise.
