Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a relatively quick procedure. It usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to 1 hours, depending on how large of an area is involved. Superficial light brown pigment irregularities of the skin may be removed utilizing laser resurfacing. These are typically seen with aging skin damaged by the sun. Common areas exhibing this are the face and back of the hands. Both areas may improve with laser resurfacing treatment.

A second major area addressed is fine lines in the skin which develop with age. Superficial wrinkles are reduced by tightening the skin. Laser treatment not only removes som of the old, damaged outer epidermis layer of skin, but also causes new, thicker collagen-support tissue formation in the layer of skin below, the dermis. Reversing the natural thinning and wrinkles of the skin give a smoother, more youthful appearance.

When the imperfections are especially deep, Dr. Sproule may recommend that the resurfacing be performed in two or more stages.

When the procedure is over,we may choose to treat the resurfaced skin with applications of protective creams or ointments until healing is complete. In some cases we may choose to apply a bandage over the treated areas which will cover and protect the healing skin for the first five to ten days.
