Your intitial consultation with Dr. Sproule is very important. Dr. Sproule will need your complete medical history, so check your own records ahead of time and be ready to provide this information. Be sure to inform Dr. Sproule if you have any allergies; if you're taking any vitamins, medications (prescription or over-the-counter), or other drugs, and if you smoke.
Your eyelid lift surgery goals and expectations should be discussed. You'll need to discuss whether to do all four eyelids or just the upper and lower ones, whether skin as well as fat will be removed, and whether any additional procedures are appropriate.
In order to perform both upper and lower lid surgery, the procedure begins with extremely careful measurements and markings. The lower surgery involves an incision immediately under the lower eye lid in a natural crease, followed by the elevation of the skin to expose the fat, which is carefully repositioned back under the eye where it has herniated out from. A careful evaluation is made as to whether the eye lid needs to be tightened or shortened, a very minimal amount of excess skin is removed, and the incision is closed. For the upper lid, an incision is made in the natural crease of the lid after careful measurement, and removal or insetting of excessive fat is performed.
Dr. Sproule will explain the techniques and the anesthesia he will use during your eyelid lift surgery, the type of facility where the eyelid lift surgery will be performed, and the risks and costs involved. (Note: Most insurance policies and government health plans do not cover eyelid surgery, unless you can prove that drooping upper lids interfere with your vision.)
The surgery is not very painful, therefore strong pain killers are not usually needed. If there is excess tearing or dry eye, lubrication with eye drops is normally all that is needed along with cool compresses to the eye. Dr. Sproule's favourite "recipe" consists of an entire box of Camomile tea thrown into a pitcher of boiling water and then refrigerated. Camomile tea bags at refrigerator temperature is at the right temperature and the size of the tea bag is a perfect size to fit the eye socket. These tea bags impart some inflammatory effect to the fresh wound!
Please don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results.
