Breast Implants for Breast Augmentation

Breast implants are used to augment a woman's breast size or help her cope with the after effects of breast cancer or for cosmetic reasons. You can choose from the different types of breast implants available today.

Although the differences between most breast implants are minimal, many women will enquire about the shape and type of breast implants that may be appropriate for their breast augmentation procedure. For this reason we are including a summary of the most common types of breast implants that may be selected for a breast augmentation.

Saline Breast Implants

As the name implies, saline breast implants are filled with a sterile salt solution, making them harmless is absorbed by the human body. Saline breast implants are made up of an exterior sack of solid silicone and filled with the saline fluid. Using saline implants for breast augmentation procedures also requires slightly smaller incisions, leads to less scarring and faster recovery. Finally, because saline breast implants are filled up after the exterior sack is inserted; they can be easily adjusted to achieve the desired breast symmetry.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants are the most commonly used breast implants worldwide. Silicone breast implants may be a little more expensive, but they generally give a nicer, fuller look following your breast augmentation surgery. Today's silicone implant is made up of very dense, high-strength silicone which makes it more durable and rupture proof. It has the consistency of solidified gel, thus making the breasts look and feel more natural to the touch.

Gel Filled Implants

Gel filled implants have been in use for nearly 20 years. Gel filled implants feel more like natural breast tissue and are FDA cleared for use in US and Canada. Gel implants feature a cohesive substance that behaves as a solid rather than a liquid. It holds together uniformly while still retaining the natural give of breast tissue.

Coated Breast Implants

Textured breast implants were created to reduce the chance of capsular contracture. However, clinical studies have shown that textured implants do not impact the likelihood of developing capsular contracture one way or another.
